2025 Fresher Guide

Intro

Welcome to the UWA Esports club! It's a place for casual and competitive gamers alike.  From shooters and MOBAs to Switch games and PC games, you're bound to find something for you.

Although the term esports often makes people think only of the competitive side of gaming, please don't feel intimidated as the majority of the club's events nowadays are casual and social members. But if you are into the competitive side, you'll also find another side to the club where our teams push themselves to compete against other universities.

We run a number of events every semester, including weekly games nights, our iconic Quiz Nights, tournaments and more! To see what we've got in store for you this semester we've included an events preview section a little bit further on.

Discord

The best place to stay connected with the Club is to join our Discord! All our online events happen here and we have channels for all our popular games. We also make most of our event announcements here.

You can join here! https://discord.gg/XSubsAHWfa

Membership

Members are the very foundation of our club. Becoming a member helps fund our activities as well as show the Guild that students are interested in what we do.

Members are given accounts that can login to our PCs as well as discounts to our events (such as Quiz Night). They also receive voting rights at our General Meetings, such as the AGM where we elect our committee.

Becoming a member is incredibly easy. If you didn't manage to get your membership at O-Day, simply come to our clubroom and ask the Sentry member to sign you up. Membership costs $5 and you can pay via cash, card or bank transfer. Alternatively, you can also get membership online using this Rubric link though it costs 50c extra and we encourage people to sign up in-person instead.

Clubroom

Last year we acquired a clubroom! It's located in Cameron Hall which you can enter via a door next to the Tav. Our clubroom has a Switch set-up and four PC set-ups, as well as an air-conditioner and mini fridge (stocked with purchasable soft drinks).

Our clubroom is located on the top floor of Cameron Hall. The main entrance is on left of the Tav when facing it with the carpark / Matilda bay behind you. This is the entrance shown on the map above.

There is another entrance to Cameron Hall through the loading bay of Guild Village but is harder to find so it's best to have someone show you as it is a helpful shortcut to IGA.

The clubroom is a great place to hang out between classes, meet new people and of course, play some games! Only members can log into the computers but membership only costs $5, lasts for a year and includes discounts for our Quiz Nights and voting rights at our General Meetings. Once you have your membership see a Door member in the clubroom to get a PC account setup for you. Our Switch can be played by anyone with or without a membership.

In our clubroom, we sell soft drinks for $1.50 each and offer card / cash payments.

Sentry

People who can open and hold the room are called Sentries. If you need any help (i.e. to get a PC account setup) in the clubroom please find the Sentry on duty and they will always be happy to lend a hand. Once you're familiar with the Club and have gotten to know a few members of Committee, we would encourage you to apply for Sentry if you are interested as it helps keep the room open for as long as possible.

Events

Weekly Games Nights

We have a mix of online and in-person games nights of everything from League of Legends, to Marvel Rivals alongside party games such as Among Us and some variety games like Gmod.

We've made it easy to see our first 2 weeks of events on a poster, so make sure to come along to those that interest you most!

Some game events marked 'in our clubroom' mean that an event organiser will be playing from the Clubroom, which gives you the option of coming along in-person with the guarantee it'll be open.

Fresher Welcome

Included in the schedule above is our Fresher Welcome, which is happening on Tuesday 25th at 4pm in EZONE Social.

This event is tailor-made for club members to engage (or re-engage) with the club. Here you can meet other club freshers, older club members as well as committee.

The Fresher Welcome will start with a chance to chill and play on either some Switch / PC setups or boardgames before some gaming themed (non-cringe) icebreakers and ending with a walk to the clubroom if you haven't had a chance to go already.

We'll be offering free pizza and snacks / soft drinks to members!

Quiz Nights

Our Quiz Nights are our premier semesterly events! It's the perfect opportunity to flex your video game knowledge across a whole bunch of genres. We generally have a max table size of 6 and you can attend with a table of your own or we can sort you into a table for you to meet new people! Tickets include pizza and one drink as well as the opportunity to win some neat prizes.

Our Semester 1 Quiz Night will on Thursday the 20th of March, starting at 6pm across three rooms in EZONE North. We've open ticket sales early for O-Day but a formal announcement with more info will come the day of our Fresher Welcome.

 You can get tickets here!

UWAES Quiz Night Sem 2 2025 (over 100 attendees!)

Inter-University Collabs

UniLAN

UniLAN is a 24-hour collaborative LAN party organised by UWA clubs as well clubs from Curtin and Murdoch. In recent years, we have cycled between a venue at Curtin and EZONE at UWA. Attendees bring their own PCs and enjoy razor fast internet as well as the chance to compete in a bunch of tournaments we run. People have also been known to attend without full PCs to chill out with friends / play boardgames.

We generally run this during study breaks so stay tuned for a UniLAN announcement soon!

Cameron Hall Collabs

Charity Vigil

Charity Vigil is an overnight collaboration event with fellow Cameron Hall clubs (UCC, UniSFA, & Unigames) that raises money for a chosen charity. Each club runs various events such as tournaments, pay to win boardgames, and karaoke.

UN-Charity Vigil

UN-Charity Vigil is held at the very start of the year before semester. It is very similar to Charity Vigil with its main difference being that it is not charitable but instead an event to raise money for the participating clubs to help run even better events and improve the clubs general running over the next year.

Competitive Teams

We field a number of competitive esports teams that compete against other universities around Australia. Our most consistent teams are for League of Legends (for QUT's Intervarsity), but we have fielded Overwatch (for AAOL's Intervarsity division) and Rocket League (for AEL Elite) teams in recent years and are looking into a Valorant team for this year for a brand new competition.

Our exact team arrangements are still being worked out but keep an eye on our announcements channel for signup forms. Our new clubroom this year may also be used for in-person scrim sessions which we're very excited about.

We have also recently signed a partnership agreement with UWA Sport as we try to consolidate our competitive side this year.

If you have any questions about our competitive teams please contact Vice President @__zephyris__ on Discord.

Friends of UWA Esports

UCC

The University Computer Club (UCC) is a close friend of ours, they help us with technical issues and have faster wifi available in Cameron Hall as an alternative to Unifi. Their clubroom is located in Cameron Hall with us and has several Windows and Linux PCs, a printer that’s cheaper than Uniprint, and a 3D printer.

Unigames

This is another of our Cameron Hall neighbours. They specialise in all things tabletop games, this includes boardgames, tabletop roleplaying games, wargames, and card games. Their clubroom is home to everything from casual boardgame playing to tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and Call of Cthulu, as well as just general hanging out in between classes.

UniSFA

This is the club for all things Science Fiction & Fantasy, they have a library of over 5,500 books that members can borrow as well as regular screenings, book club meetings & trope talks. They also have a clubroom located in Cameron Hall that people use to relax, watch movies, read, and sometimes even study in between classes.

UWAnime

UWAnime Is a close friend of ours although they are not located In Cameron Hall, instead being in Guild Hall. UWAnime is the perfect place for exploring and appreciating all things anime. We also often collaborate to run Smash Bro Tournament together, with the next one scheduled for Semester 1, Week 7.

Redbull

Redbull is a long-term sponsor of ours that allows us to give out free Redbulls as prizes at events as well as giving out free Redbulls to club members while stocks last.

Perth Smash

Perth Smash are a recent partner who we run the monthly Late Registration Smash Ultimate tournament with at UWA. They run a variety of regular fighting game tournaments mainly focussed but not limited to Smash. You can join their Discord here.
